While there are many things we can all do to enhance the outside of our bodies, acceptance either way comes from the inside first. If you have a distorted view of your outer looks or body image that comes from your inner hurts, no matter what you do, you still will not be satisfied. How often have you lost weight, exercised and gained muscle, changed your eating habits, or more, only to find you are still unhappy with the outer casing you live with?
For many of us, this happens quite often. Do you sweat it when a particular event is coming up for you to attend because you are so afraid of how you have changed or how you will look in clothing that is still too small for you? Do you criticize your body because you have that scar from surgery or maybe stretch marks from having children?
To put this in dual perspective, men also deal with body acceptance. Are you self-conscious because you have gained more belly fat and try to compensate by buying oversized clothes or amping up another feature that might make you feel better to see change? If you haven’t addressed your inner landscape, you will never accept your outer one, even with washboard abs and bulging muscles. There will be no amount of new clothing or concoctions to hide imperfections that will make you feel better about yourself.
Only dealing with the root cause of your lack of acceptance as a person on the inside will help you with your body image or whatever shows on the outside. You can have a lot of money, a great home, an excellent job, or a fantastic family, but if you have body image hurts or soul scars that go unhealed, you will never be happy with what you have accomplished or seen in the mirror.
Allowing yourself to go unhealed from the inside first can cause issues such as body dysmorphic disorder, anorexia, bulimia, starvation diets, unneeded plastic surgery, or self-harm. Hatred is hatred regardless of where it is pointed. If it is pointed at yourself, you will begin acting out on your hatred for yourself. Your relationships will start to suffer, you will close off to others, and self-depreciation will come from your mouth. This happens because it is all inside you, and what is inside must eventually come out. Self-loathing can lead to depression and anxiety. Self-loathing can even lead to organ shutdown or death. See how serious this is? Can you see how changing makeup routines or working on what new clothing you will try will not fix what is inside of you?
Work on fixing the inside with someone professional at body image issues. (I’m recommending a therapist, not a life coach, in this case). If you do not, what is inside can threaten your life, and you can become far more critical than having an image problem. Can you see why I am so against how many influencers online try to persuade us to buy the latest trend, claiming it will fix the inside because the outside is better dressed? Isn’t it better to deal with what harms you and work on your inner image? After all, you can put on a temporary fix, but the bottom line is that you have to deal with the body your Creator gifted you with. Begin with the soul you are, and you will learn your life lessons so much better, not to mention become more soulfully healthy.
