Learning to Yield

It seems the only time I hear about yielding has been in connection to driving a vehicle. You might imagine my intrigue when Spirit dropped the word “yield” onto my mind this morning. In the context of driving we allow other drivers to pass by before we merge or proceed. We give the “right of way”, don’t we?

There is another reason the word came to mind today and it has to do with how we deal with other people. There are a few applications of the word in this case. It can mean to give way to another’s opinion, stepping back to listen to another’s point of view or even stepping aside to allow someone to pass on through our lives.
When I considered the word a bit more there was also a caution there to not yield to anyone’s determination to take over concerning our lives. Sometimes we stop and listen but sometimes we step back only to allow someone to pass through. When someone asserts their “right of way” out of turn it compromises our personal integrity just like when someone cuts us off in traffic. If you have ever had that done to you, you can understand how boundaries are important to be enforced in life. When you allow someone to cut you off too much you risk a collision both in traffic and in your personal life.
Navigating your life can be as simple as keeping those dividing lines in place as people pass through it or choosing to yield and allow them to merge in a safe and respectful manner. You make the choice as to when you want to allow someone to impose upon you, give them grace to take the right of way or to enforce your personal boundaries. Life is not hard to navigate.
