This morning, I began pondering what living an authentic life means. I sat and took a deep breath in and out. Don’t even ask me how these things come to me. The only answer I can come up with is that they are channeled through the spiritual pipeline, whether it rains down on me or bubbles up from inside of me. All I know is I am so glad this happens to me!
Alright, back to authenticity and living an authentic life. I truly wanted more than the answer, “Be true to who you are as a person,” although that is a huge chunk of it. Although, sometimes, we don’t always know all of who the person is inside of us, do we? Every one of us has lived and accumulated issues from the circumstances in our lives. To truly know who we are, it takes some digging and healing. I call this heart excavation. My very best answer to being authentic and living in authenticity is to be exactly who we are now. Yesterday is no longer here, and tomorrow has not been processed but we all have “now“.
To get to the heart of the matter, I asked myself, “Who are you right this very moment in time, and what does it mean to live in authenticity in this moment?” My questions looked like this:
**Are you living to just please others, or are you truly being who you are and living as you are?
**Are you seeking validation of your possible decisions before you take your next steps in life, or do you just wing it and assume it will work out as it should?
**When met with differing opinions, ideas, and beliefs, are you authentic with your stance on your own, or do you bend to simply be accepted?
**Do your choices match your values in life, or have you settled for less just to make a choice?
**Does it matter what others think of you instead of what you know of yourself?
**Have you judged your heart too harshly, or has grace been a guide for your life and decisions?
**Do you change to fit in, or can you be around others and be completely who you are with no apology?
**Can you accept others’ ideas, beliefs, and decisions without judging them wrong or unimportant?
**Do you shrink back and be less powerful to get attention or not allow your strength to shine through?
**Does your career choice match your values, morals, beliefs, and talents, or does it fall short of who you are as a person and soul?
Living in authenticity begs the questions and answers them. We have a short trip on this earth, so getting this right is very important. Do any of us ever really want to bend to fit into someone else’s agenda, or do we want to pave our way through life like an explorer who can not wait for the next part of our adventure to unfold?
The cost of not being completely authentic when it comes to being ourselves is too high not to consider this. The cost means losing ourselves and important growth opportunities in our lives. To me, the cost is too high to not evaluate the questions!
