What Forgiveness is and What it is Not

I think forgiving and forgiveness is one of the most misunderstood actions of the heart and spirit. I get it. Some things are just too difficult and hurtful to even think of forgiving it. It’s all our own process and it’s all personal. This morning, I felt like I needed to clarify forgiveness in my own life, so why not share, right? So, let’s look at what forgiveness is and what it isn’t.

What forgiveness is NOT!

Forgiveness is a very personal act of the heart between ourselves and God. It does NOT release another person or place of business from wrongdoing. Everyone has their own journey of conscience. We are not on earth to be anyone’s keeper.

Forgiveness is NOT a religious act. No one needs a priest, minister, or rabbi to forgive anyone. It is a personal matter. However, if being with someone to confess the feelings we hold against someone who hurt us seems helpful then by all means do it!

Forgiveness does not determine who is right or wrong. There is NO JUDGEMENT in the action.

It does not reconcile us personally to someone who is not good to be around. Although reconciliation is possible it is not required to forgive. We need discernment to determine if another human being is healthy for us to be around. Forgiving and keeping apart is totally alright.

What forgiveness IS:

Forgiveness is an act of personal heart and conscience between us and God that releases us from the bondage of suffering pain from another’s actions or inaction. It is also a personal act where we have an opportunity to forgive ourselves and ask God for forgiveness. It all has a power in the spiritual realm to send relief and release from anything that holds us back.

It is a union with God that brings blessings to our lives. Yes, we need God for this! It’s a personal act between us and our Creator that no one can interfere with or force upon us. It is a total act of gratitude. You might not see blessings as a result of forgiveness immediately but over time you will see that your heart will feel lighter and life will take on a whole new energy.

Forgiveness is a “healer” in its own right. It’s a part of love and states we love ourselves and love our Creator enough to activate its power. It’s not always easy and might take a few times to feel like it has been completed but over time forgiveness can heal the heart and body. Any good thing that comes from the power of God’s love will bring healing. Since forgiveness is a heart-centered energy, the lack of it can harm the heart emotionally, energetically, and eventually physically.

My suggestion:

Put your hand on your heart, join with God, and state you forgive yourself and others first thing in the morning. Let it be heart-transforming and not just an action. If you are not feeling it then do it until you do. Sooner than later you will feel that lightness I spoke of. The burden of carrying hard feelings for something someone did or even what you did is way too hard to bear. Jesus had taught “His burden is light.” This means you don’t have to carry it, there is a solution there and that is to forgive. Even forgive your stubbornness if you have to! God lives within you and will be with you. You will immediately activate a new facet of your life. Allow life to shift. It might be hard at first but trusting and allowing life to unfold is part of learning here on our planet!
