Does Hypnosis Really Work?

Did you know you are always “on”? What I mean by that is, your mind is always working. Not just your brain, but your mind. This includes what we call the “unconscious” mind. You have both consciousness and a part of you that is always running in the background. The unconscious mind is kind of like a computer program that just runs and monitors everything. The only thing is, the unconscious mind also controls a lot of things; much more than you might believe.

Also, like a computer, it can be programmed to change things you desire to change. It’s really quite simple. You tell it what you want instead of having it run on autopilot in the background telling you how life will be. Much of what is there can be attributed to what you have experienced in the past and other things are habits you have picked up along the way as a result of past and choices you have made.

In an article printed this month by Chicago Magazine, a writer speaks of her experience going to a certified hypnotist in order to stop her from clenching her jaw. This is something many of us do. It comes from stress, becomes a habit, and not only grinds the teeth down but causes headaches too. The title of the article is “A Hypnosis Skeptic Gets Very, Very Sleepy.” In the article she explains how hypnosis proved to be advantageous and effective in making much needed, or desired, changes in life.

Like the author, many go into hypnosis sessions very skeptical. I know I did at one time. The hypnotist proved me wrong. I had a very uncomfortable situation to face in life and it brought about a great deal of fear. It was fear of being in the presence of a person and confrontation. During the first session I suddenly saw this person as a small mouse and I was a huge cat! The hypnotist did not feed this into my brain, it just appeared! As she did her thing, vision after vision entered into my mind. I was so relaxed, empowered, and honestly wanted to fall asleep. Yet, I was also aware of everything. My fear was resolved and I confronted my situation with confidence and won!

Most people only go into mild hypnosis, which is the Alpha state of trance and are aware of what is being said, and surroundings. In fact, just reading this article you might still be aware of what is going on around you while you read. Or you might stare at your phone reading a text, and yet be working out what to fix for dinner at night. Then there is the situation where you might be driving and envisioning other scenarios at the same time. Before you know it, you are at your destination. It seems like time has flown and you have been mildly entertained at the same time. This is hypnosis. Its not deepeened hypnosis but it is still hypnosis.

We all have things we would love to change; some things more critical than others. Hypnosis can do this! There is nothing scary or freaky about it. You do it every day of your life. The difference between that and going to see someone for a clinical hypnosis session is the decision is mutually made to make a change and the intent is focused on that change. Usually it only takes a few sessions and a recording of the original hypnosis session to take home with you. It’s quite an amazing miracle for those who truly suffer from anxiety, fears, habits, depression, weight issues, and more. Unlike what many are led to believe, the hypnotist does not have control of your mind and can’t give you any suggestions that you would normally not accept. You are still in control of everything, especially the desired change you truly want!

So, to take away the fear of coming out of a hypnotic trance clucking like a chicken, let me assure you in this. The stage hypnosis we have been taught in days gone by are not the results that will happen while seeing a certified and trained hypnotherapist. Why not give it a try for those things you wish were different in your life? It won’t help you control others but it will help you handle others actions better if that is what you are seeking.

Weekly Wisdom: Mastering Calm in the Storm. “Peace be still.”

Have you ever experienced a natural calm during a time of challenge or disaster? Our bodies create this calm in order to help us see a situation clearly and deal with it quickly and efficiently. It truly is quite a miracle! I know I have felt this sudden calm during some of the most difficult times in my life so I know it first hand. It’s obtainable and available when we need it.

What we often don’t realize is it’s also available any other time too. This wonderful calm is like when Jesus commanded the waves of the sea to become still. His utterance, “Peace, be still” is almost like an affirmation He put out to create the environment He wanted all to witness. The disciples were in a boat filled with fear, panic and anxiety. We know this could only create more of the same. Jesus had to change the state of the situation by calming the sea so they could see more clearly. They were never in danger, but they perceived they were. Remember fear is “false evidence appearing real”.

We have this stillness ability anytime we need it. Everything Jesus did we can also do. I love the saying “sometimes God calms the storm but sometimes God lets the storm rage and calms His child.”  The amazing thing we eventually notice is, once we become calm in the midst of a storm, the storm subsides for us and we become clear minded to deal with just about anything. The waves of life often appear so much bigger than they actually are. They are highlighted by our manufactured fear concerning them.

The key in moving back into the calm state is within the “pause“. Practicing taking a breath, tapping into our Christed state within us, and interrupting the false state of the mind is one of the most helpful things we can ever learn. Not only that, the pause helps to create a clearing of the mind and the light of “calm” can be allowed to shine through. I like to call this a “critical bypass”. We enter into a critical moment where we can choose one state of being or another. Life is about choice. We can take that pause and choose to not see fear. We can question if what we are seeing, thinking, or experiencing is real or false. Ask yourself during this time, “Is this true?” Often we discover what is happening or about to happen is not true at all, but things that are manufactured in our brains. We love to project our fears into the future, don’t we?

Try this instead…

Take some deep breaths during this time. Oxygenate the blood within your body. We tend to breathe very shallow when upset, see fear, or feel anxious. Deep breathing brings more oxygen into the brain. An oxygenated brain is a better thinking brain. While doing this place three fingers from one hand on your heart area where your sternum is. This is where your thymus gland is. Then press one hand into your belly right where your belly button is. Or you can press two fingers into your belly button area and one right between your eyebrows on your forehead. The area between the eyebrows is the pineal gland. Breathe deep a few times and then breathe normally. You will automatically become more calm. Affirm Jesus’ words, “Peace be still.” You are affirming stillness into your being and your body. You are also activating calm by using your bodies natural energy meridians.

Believe me, you will begin to see things more clearly, the storm will seem more calm, and decisions will be made in a more proficient way. You will express yourself in a more calm and assertive manor and your body will thank you for it! I’ve often heard it expressed that the “pause” is a moment of creation. Let this practiced pause create more stillness in your life’s situations. Be gentle on yourself. Life is a journey and no one masters any practice immediately. That’s why we call it practice! This is God given energy medicine at its best and most simple perfection.

This week, practice mastering calm in your life by also mastering the creative pause. Then take your practice into the following weeks until it becomes a part of your natural state. Have beautiful calm moments in the weeks ahead!

Re-evaluating The Hard Things: Talking About Shame

When you were growing up, have you ever heard someone say to a child, “You should be ashamed of yourself!” This usually came after¬† some perceived error in judgment or just plain bad behavior. I wonder if any parent ever stopped to think about those words and what they might mean when someone becomes an adult. I wonder where parents heard those words themselves, took on the shameful perception of themselves, and then unconsciously passed it on as “good morality” teaching. When I hear those words myself, I see a little girl sitting cross legged on a bed with her head down ready to cry.

When a person grows up in shaming then shame is what they carry either unconsciously, consciously, or both. As shaming is passed down through family lines it becomes like a genetic disease. Most of the time it goes unnoticed like a program that runs in the background of a life, just like on a computer. Then it comes out the first opportunity it gets, to stab a person right into the shame wound. The next thing they know it comes out of their pores in the form of anger, fear, humiliation, and the list goes on.

Someone who has been seriously shamed can never take any type of correction, teaching, or instruction. They just believe they are being wronged, bruised, and shamed again and again. This does not end until awareness is brought to the wound. Once something is known it can not be unknown. It becomes a person’s truth and can be very transformative if an individual decides to make it that way.

The next time someone corrects you, tries to teach you, criticizes you, or worse, think about what feelings are suddenly brought up. How does your body feel and is it reacting as well? Sometimes you might feel sick in your stomach, your breath might become faster and shorter, or you might feel like you want to storm off, lash out, or RUN!  Pain is always an indicator of illness of any kind. It makes no difference if it is physical or emotional. It brings an opportunity to create healing. The next time a situation brings you distress, instead of blaming another person or a situation, let it be a healing moment.

Close your eyes, put one hand over your heart and one on your stomach. Breath deep and slowly. Ask yourself what feelings this issue is bringing up for you and if you would like to decide to heal yourself instead of react. If you want to heal yourself, sit with God and tell yourself the words that others never seemed to ever say. “I am valuable.” I am enough.” “Others’ opinions or thoughts of me don’t have to be made my own.” “I am deeply loved and admired.” “I am unique and God sees me as powerful.” There are many you can say. Maybe write down some of your own and keep them in a place where you see them every day. Then when shame comes to call, open the door with a self love bomb that sends it packing for good!

Practice makes perfect in this case. Let it become second nature to you. Refuse to pass shame down through family lines. Refuse to allow others words, actions, or thoughts of you make you feel less than what you really are. Instead of blame, heal. Instead of lash out or react, reaffirm. Instead of shame, brilliance!
